Those users who find that the "default" hot keys used by Word Translator interfere with some of the commands of their word processing program (or other program) may want to define their own hot keys. You may also change the "default" hot keys after installation by using Word Translator's "setup.exe" program. If, at any point during installation, you're in doubt about how to proceed with the installation, push the F-1 function key on your keyboard to open Word Translator's Help menu. The installation program for Word Translator for DOS creates a directory on your hard disk drive normally called WORDTRAN. Word Translator's Basic "Default" Hot Keys (Control) Ctrl + LEFT SHIFT = Activates/opens Word Translator Alt + RIGHT SHIFT = Opens Word Translator's Setup Changing the "Default" Hot Keys After Installation If, after you have installed the program, you want to redefine Word Translator's "default" hot keys, you may do so. First change your current directory to the directory containing Word Translator. For example, if the Word Translator files are on the C drive in a directory called WORDTRAN, you would change the directory by typing CD WORDTRAN at the C:\> prompt and then pressing the key on your keyboard. The prompt (and, thereby, the directory) should change to C:\>WORDTRAN At the C:\>WORDTRAN prompt, type SETUP and press the key. From the setup screen, press the F10 key on your keyboard as a Yes answer to the question: "Do you want to define your own 'hot keys?' (F10=yes)." For each hot key combination, you have the either choice to keep the "default" or change it. Each hot key combination can consist of a maximum of three (3) keys. The first key can be ALT, CONTROL, LEFT SHIFT, or RIGHT SHIFT. The second key may be ALT, CONTROL, LEFT SHIFT, RIGHT SHIFT or a Function Key (F1 through F12). The third key can (1) be "blank" (omitted) or (2) be another Function Key (F1 through F12) or (3) a Letter key. This allows you the widest range of hot key possibilities to help prevent any potential hot key conflicts between Word Translator and your other programs or applications. Translating a Word From the Screen First, make sure Word Translator is loaded (memory-resident). Refer to the instructions under the heading: "How to Load/Call-up Word Translator" if you're not sure how to do that. After Word Translator is loaded (memory- resident), load your word processor. Now you can either type something on the screen or load an existing file into your word processor. The word that was under the cursor (or one space to the left of the cursor) should appear in the upper box of Word Translator under the heading "Word/Phrase to Translate." A second Word Translator box will appear displaying the heading "CHOOSE Word/Phrase." If the word under the cursor exists in the dictionary, you can press the key to translate the word. If the word under the cursor does not exist in the dictionary, you can choose to either add it to the dictionary (by pressing the F3 key), or your can choose another word from the dictionary. To exit without choosing any of the words displayed, press the ESC key. The pop-up window will change and display the heading "CHOOSE Translation" in the second box from the top of the pop-up window. Choose a translation in the same way you chose a word in the "CHOOSE Word/Phrase" box. Simply use the up or down arrow (toggle) keys to highlight different translations and then press the key when the translation you prefer is highlighted. The same choice can be made by pressing a number key between "1" and "5." If all the available translations for a word fail to appear on the screen at the same time, use the PgDn and/or PgUp keys to scroll through all available translations for the word you want a translation for. Press the ESC key if you do not want to choose any translation. IMPORTANT: If at any point you wish to exit Word Translator without performing any further actions, simply press the ESC key. If, after pressing the ESC key, you return to the previous Word Translator window, press the ESC key again. You should exit from Word Translator without performing any further actions. Press the Control (Ctrl) + LEFT SHIFT ("default") keys simultaneously. The Word Translator window will pop-up on the screen with the heading "Word/Phrase to Translate" in the top box. The cursor will be in this box. Now type a word or phrase you would like to translate. A maximum of thirty-four characters is allowed. You may use the backspace key to delete any characters in the word or phrase that you are typing. When you are done press the key. A second box will appear and display "CHOOSE Word/Phrase." Adding Translations to The Dictionary If the word or phrase you have entered (or one that Word Translator has "copied" from the screen) is not found in the bilingual dictionary, you can easily add this word or phrase to the dictionary together with translations for it by pressing the F3 function key. The F3 function key is also used to add single (individual) translations to an existing set of translations when the second box from the top bears the heading "CHOOSE Translations." Deleting Translations When the second box from the top displays the heading "CHOOSE Translations," you can use the F4 function key to delete single translations (one at a time) from the existing list of translations. This is accomplished by first highlighting the translation to be deleted by using the up and down arrow (toggle) keys and then pressing the F4 function key. You will be asked if you are sure that you want to delete the highlighted translation. Be sure to answer this question carefully because nothing can retrieve a deleted translation. However, any translation you inadvertently delete can later be re-entered but only individually. Word Translator's Setup Menu The setup menu can be opened by simultaneously pressing the Alt + RIGHT SHIFT hot key combination (Alt + RIGHT SHIFT is the "default" hot key combination). When this hot key combination is pressed, you will see the following key options displayed: 0--Word Translation = ON 1--Spell Checking = OFF 2--Spell Checking Beep = OFF 3--Document Translation = OFF 4--Prediction = OFF 6--Speed of Return Buffer = MEDIUM 7--Current Language = The Selected Bilingual Dictionary Module being used by Word Translator (e.g. English-Spanish-English) You cannot have Word Translation "ON" at the same time Spell-Checking, Document Translation or Prediction is "ON." You can have only one of these options "ON" at any one time. If you press "1," both the Spell-Checking and the Spell-Checking Beep will be "ON." Then, if you press the ESC key to exit the setup menu, Spell-Checking will be activated. When the Spell-Checking Beep option is "ON," Word Translator will "beep" every time a word is misspelled or cannot be found it in the bilingual dictionary. You may turn the "beep" off once Spell- Checking is selected by pressing the number "2" key. The fourth option is Document Translation. Before activating this option, you should first load the document that you wish to translate into your word processor and, then, position the cursor on top of the first word in the document. Press the Alt + RIGHT SHIFT keys simultaneously (Alt + RIGHT SHIFT is the "default" hotkey combination) to call the setup menu. Press the number "3" key to turn Document Translation "ON." If you press the number "4" key to turn Prediction "ON," another choice labeled "number 5" will appear and display the notice "5-Activate Prediction after XX characters." After this choice appears, press the number "5" key a few times and notice how the "XX" changes incrementally and, after reaching a count of 15, starts again from 1. This number denotes how many typed characters must be typed before the prediction function is activated. For more details about how the Prediction mode works, please read the Prediction section of this Manual. You can change the speed by which Word Translator "returns" words or phrases to your word processor by pressing the number "6" key. By pressing the number "7" key repeatedly, you can access different language modules if more than a single language module is installed on your computer. For the Russian language you have the option of choosing between the CYRILSCII or RUSCII character standards by pressing the number "8" key. When using the Russian language module, you can also change the keyboard layout by pressing the number "9" key. You can also disable the Russian keyboard driver by pressing the F10 function key. We recommend that you use the CYRILSCII standard unless, for some reason, you prefer the RUSCII standard. Spell-Checking Word Translator can spell-check in two different languages as you type. Every time you press the space bar, Word Translator will determine if a spell-check is required. If it is, Word Translator will spell-check the word occurring just before the last space entered. If a word is misstyped or not in the bilingual dictionary, Word Translator's spell-check will "beep" and display a window with a suggested spelling. You may scroll up and down the window using the PgUp/PgDn (toggle) keys and to choose a word to replace the one just typed in your word processor. Move the highlight bar to the correct spelling and press the key or just press the number of the correct translation. Either action will replace the incorrectly spelled word with one that is correctly spelled. If you are an extremely fast typist, some letters will only appear on the screen after a slight delay (because it takes time to spell-check each word), however, no entry will be lost if the spelling is correct. To activate spell-checking, follow the steps shown above under the heading "Word Translator's Setup Menu." You may deactivate the spell check "beep" whenever you wish by changing the setup menu (called-up by simultaneously pressing the Alt + RIGHT SHIFT "default" hot key combination). Whenever you wish, you may also deactivate the spell-checking feature in the Setup menu. Document Translation The Document Translation feature allows the user to translate a complete document from one language to another inside your word processor. The Document Translation feature will perform a word-by-word and phrase-by-phrase translation with phrases totaling five or less words. This will not accomplish a "perfect" sentence translation because the proper grammatical order of words might differ from one language to the other. However, it will provide a good "first approximation" and can serve as an aid in final translation. You might find that you are able to use this feature to translate most sentence segments, leaving only some segments that you will have to edit. Despite its limitations, the Document Translation feature can greatly assist you in translating documents from one language to another. The Document Translation feature is activated in the Setup Menu. Once it is activated, Word Translator will start translating the document beginning with the word under the cursor. The Word Translator translation window will appear. At this point, you can either choose to translate the word by selecting a translation, or you can choose not to translate the word by pressing the ESC key. You can also stop the document translation process at any point by pressing the F4 function key. Prediction Word Translator's prediction feature is the latest addition to the program. While you are typing in your word processor, Word Translator will display suggestions (predictions) of what you want to type after a certain number of letters/keystrokes have been entered. The number of letters/keystrokes Word Translator counts before going into "prediction mode" can be changed in the setup menu. The prediction feature also simultaneously accomplishes a form of spell-checking as it provides prediction. By using the prediction feature, skilled translators can significantly reduce translation time because the computer does most of the "typing." To activate the Prediction feature, press the Setup hot key combination (Alt + RIGHT SHIFT is the "default"), then press the number "4" key to turn the Prediction feature "ON." You can press the number "5" key to change the number of letters/keystrokes required to activate the Prediction feature. After setting this selection, you can press the ESC key to exit the setup menu. Then, start typing in your word processor. After the allocated number of letters/keystrokes have been entered (displayed on one side of your screen), you will seen a pop-up window with the number key choices "0" through "9" and function key choices F1 through F12. One of the choices will be highlighted. You can change the highlighted choice by using the up and down arrow (toggle) keys. To select a highlighted choice, either press the key or its hot key combination--the number keys "0" through "9" or the function keys numbered F1 through F12. You can obtain the translation for each line displayed on the screen by pressing the SHIFT + (Choice) hot key combination (Choice = the number "0" through "9" keys or F1 through F12). If any key combination other than the "Choice" hot key (SHIFT + Choice or the key) is selected, Word Translator will exit from the pop-up window and accomplish nothing. It might require a little practice to obtain full benefit from the Prediction feature but try it out. You'll find that the time invested will, ultimately, be well worth the time. Uninstall Word Translator In some cases, you may want eliminate Word Translator from your computer's memory in order to free memory for some other purpose. Word Translator allows you to easily do this. To uninstall Word Translator, first Exit your word processor so that you are in DOS. Press the (Control) Ctrl + Alt + E keys simultaneously. The message "Word Translator has been removed from memory" will appear on the screen. Then, press the key. This action will effectively free the memory of your computer that was previously used by Word Translator. You can also uninstall Word Translator by using the "/u" command line parameter: WORDTRAN /u + . This option is provided to enable you to uninstall Word Translator from a batch file. Change an Accent To change an accent: 1. You must NOT be using the Russian language module. 2. Place the cursor after the character that you want to accent. 3. Press the accent hot key combination (Alt + C is the "default") repeatedly until the current accent is displayed on the screen. Typing Russian Characters To type Russian characters, you must use Word Translator with the Russian language module. To change from one language module to another, please refer to the Setup section in this Manual. The following applies ONLY If you do NOT use Word Perfect with the Russian language module: if, while typing, you see only Roman characters, you can change to Russian characters by pressing the Russian language hot key combination once (Alt + C is the "default"). Doing so will enable you to type Russian characters. To return to typing English characters, again, simultaneously press the Russian language hot key combination (the "default," again, is Alt + C).
